“I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a book.” – J.K. Rowling
Certainly, there’s just something magical about it. That sensation that entraps you as your fingers make their way through the pages of your favorite book. Getting to explore the world in the comfort of your own home. This quote holds truth; a truth that we, kinaBOOKasan, believe in. We believe books are avenues for knowledge and exploration, and everyone deserves to be a witness to this.
KinaBOOKasan, founded in 2018, is a community literacy program that focuses on helping public school students in Grades 9-12. The name came about upon realizing the treasure trove of knowledge that books contain. We’ve partnered with schools from Marikina City in the hopes of paving the way for quality public education in the Philippines through the enhancement of public school students’ critical thinking and reading comprehension skills. It is with this program that we not only wish to unlock the students’ minds, but to unleash as well the bibliophile within each and every one of us.
Falling in love with a book is easy. You can fall for the character, a place or sometimes even the knowledge it contains. It is through books that we learn lessons, explore worlds, and find meaning. A true adventure brimming with literary convention and certainly, knowledge and skills gained are liberating. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to experience the joy of literature books. This is the reality kinaBOOKasan is faced with, and we are challenged to take initiative and make a change. Inspired by the call to action, kinaBOOKasan is hosting a benefit concert, BOOKed! Through this event, we aim to raise enough funds to build a library for one of our partner schools.
BOOKed was held on September 28, 2019 at 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Assumption College San Lorenzo. BOOKed will feature student bands MMXV, Sunny Side Up, and Motion Picture Blur. BOOKed will also include performances by The Great Dane, Joey Tha Boy, Paolo Sandejas, Nathan & Mercury, and Curtismith! Games and activities in relation to books and education were included and good food from SisigOk, Fickle, Belgian Waffles, and more were served.
A book is a dream that you hold in your hand, and we believe that a book in every child’s hand is a dream waiting to come true. With such, all proceeds from this event will be going towards the creation of a library in one of our partner schools. Moreover, from the donations given during the vent, we have collected over a 100 books to be placed in the library upon its creation.
